Film Review – Under the Skin

Now if you haven’t heard of the film ‘Under the Skin’ I wouldn’t be surprised. Knowing very little about the premise, I was apprehensive at first. I was told by others who had seen it that it would be one of the strangest films I had seen this year – and they were completely right.

Starring as the lead, Scarlett Johansson plays an alien who lures men into her house in the depths of Scotland. Now I’m not going to lie, this film is pretty disturbing, makes little sense and is filled to the brim with erotic imagery. It’s definitely not one for children.

Despite it’s weird plot, I found this film unusually appealing. I was really interested throughout, hoping for an explanation to everything I was seeing. Johansson gave a really moving performance and although the film wasn’t packed with action or even much dialogue, it still managed to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Now a quick word of warning – although the film seems to have been marketed as a sci-fi, it’s clearly much more than that. Not only does the film hold some pretty interesting ideas about identity and sexuality, it is also a reflection on humanity as whole. You should without a doubt view this film as an art house film, full of imagery and symbolism.

So before you watch this film, know that you can’t prepare for what you are about to see. Try to take in everything in and, well…. good luck. It’s not for the fainthearted.
